One-Time Workshops

The Fairlawn Neighbourhood Centre is delighted to work with community partners to offer a wide range of thought-provoking daytime and evening workshops. A small registration fee per workshop covers instructor, administration and refreshment costs. You do not need a membership to register for a workshop: however, Centre members will receive a small discount. Many programs have limited space, so please register well in advance.

Work/Family Balance: Flexible Work for Moms
Trying to find the right balance is the most stressful, heart-wrenching issue facing mothers today. In Flex Appeal: An Inspirational Guide to Flexible Work for Mothers, author Jacqueline Foley shows moms how they can get the life they want by changing the way they work. During this workshop Jacqueline will share many of her insights with you such as why you need a personal vision of work/ family balance, how to get the work arrangement you need, taking one foot off the career track, tips on juggling kids needs with flexible work and more.

Portrait Drawing

Enjoy a morning of portrait drawing combining instruction and live models. Artist and illustrator Tim McCormack will assist students in drawing with sensitivity and heightened powers of observation and confidence. All levels of students will feel comfortable in this supportive learning environment. Materials supplied.

Watercolour Greetings
Join watercolour artist Ruth Hayes for this one-day workshop and create beautiful homemade greeting cards that you can send to friends and family over the coming holiday. You will first design your own holiday images and then translate them in watercolour to rich card stock. All materials supplied. Just bring a bag lunch.
Ruth Hayes, M.A. will host this workshop. She is an exhibiting painter (Beach Studio Tour, The Newman Centre, Burlington Art etc.) and an expressive arts therapist.

Stir-Fry Cooking

Learn the art of stir-fry cooking or chao cooking. Stir-frying preserves colour, texture and taste as well as nutritional value. It is also lower in fat. Learn how to prepare vegetables and the correct way of cutting and marinating the meat before stir-frying. Just think, you can stir-fry a complete meal in just 15 minutes! It’s today’s answer for people in a hurry.
This workshop will be led by cooking enthusiast and teacher, Cecil Sonhing.

Homeopathy
Homeopathic Medicine is fast becoming an accepted and effective complementary solution to treating many common ailments. What is it and what kinds of health problems is it most effective in treating? This workshop will provide an excellent overview of the homeopathy and also guide you towards making better over-the-counter choices.
Bryce Wylde B.Sc., D.H.M.H.S., H.D. is a graduate of the Ontario College of Homeopathic Medicine. He has a private practice at the Glen Echo Homeopathic Clinic and believes in facilitating the natural healing process using only what methods are necessary to stimulate the body back into a state of balance.

Children’s Literature
Whether you’re a parent, aunt, or grandparent this is the best book primer you’ll find to help
with holiday shopping for the young readers on your list. Glenys Babcock will present the best in children’s literature for ages 4 to14 – what to read to the preschooler, engaging picture books for all ages, humourous stories for the pre-teens, novels of today for teenagers. Books have been borrowed from Mables Fables and are available there!
A recent teacher-librarian, Glenys Babcock LOVES children’s literature and takes pleasure at guiding people of all ages towards excellent books!

Naturopathic Medicine
Let renowned educator and naturopath Dr. Ruth Anne Baron share her passion and understanding of the role that naturopathic medicine can play in the 21st century. She’ll dispel the myths, answer your questions and shed new light on this exciting, multi-faceted branch of medicine.
An author and speaker with a private practice, Dr. Baron has appeared in newspapers and television throughout North America. We are very pleased and honored to have her back to the Centre this fall.

Get On The Ball – FULL

Swiss Therapy Balls have been used for decades in medical and sports settings with great results. When incorporated into an exercise program the balls help to increase flexibility and joint range of motion and can be used for strength and resistance training, balance and coordination. This workshop will provide you with a ball as well as a full range of exercises that you can practice at home.
Fitness instructor and personal trainer Linda Sciberas will take participants through their paces in this workshop.
